How can Laughing Improve Creativity?

Studies prove that humor and engaging in laughter stimulates parts of your brain involved in creative thinking and problem solving. You may be wondering, how the heck is laughing going to help me become more creative? You will see that laughing has a powerful and positive effect on our Physiology.
A research team led by Darthmouth psychologist William Kelley, PHD, asked participants to watch episodes of Seinfeld and The Simpsons while fMRI technology imaged their brain activity. Later, when they compared their brain scans with their laughing patterns, they found that about 2 seconds before participants burst out in laughter at a joke (this is when their mind is trying to be creative and working to “get” the joke), their posterior temporal lobes lit up, this is the same area of the brain that helps us resolve problems.
When you laugh, your body is programmed to suppress the stress hormones, relieve tension and just make you feel good about yourself. This makes us more creative and an effective problem solver. Just look at the history and you will find that most creative people always made time to crack jokes and laugh e.g. Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. Leonardo da Vinci filled his notebooks with jokes, Einstein cracked jokes in the middle of the meetings, and Thomas Edison just loved to laugh.
For the same reason, Laughter Yoga (an act of deliberate laughter instead of waiting for something to happen) is gaining so much popularity in the world. Indian Physician Madan Kataria, MD, discovered that deliberate, self-induced laughter has the same benefits as the real thing, it exercises the same parts of the brain. More than 300,000 people in 60 countries are getting high on the “ha ha” using the Laughter Yoga techniques.
The act of laughter is like a mini workout. It releases endorphins in our bloodstream, relieving pain and making us feel good. It also boosts immunity, increases our heart rate, help us breathe more deeply and stretches various muscles in our face and upper body.
Researches now say that human body is programmed to take a 20 mins break after every 90 minutes of work to remain creative and most productive. So next time when you find yourself stuck trying to solve something or simply over worked, just take a break and make yourself laugh. It will enhance your creativity and problem solving skills. Simply put, make more time for the “ha ha” if you want to say “ahaa”.

Laughter yoga? Interesting concept but I think that you would get many strange looks or people scratching their heads at those who just suddenly burst out laughing! Kinda similar to those people who have bluetooths and appear to be talking to themselves. Back in the 70s and 80s we’d have men in little white coats come to visit.
