I am no fan of Michael Vick. I had never even heard of him until he was arrested for animal abuse. Not just allowing dogs to fight to their deaths, but torturing them to the point they were so vicious that they needed to be in cages until they were brought into the ring – to kill or die fighting.

I didn’t know he played football until his name was emblazoned all over the papers with people arguing back and forth about his alleged guilt, or worse, it was OK what he did.

Many lucky cats and dogs owe their very lives to the services provided by local humane shelters. And, many poor victims also have lost their lives at the hands of shelters who proclaim a love for the wellbeing of all animals.

The main purpose of shelters is provide shelter to animals who have been given up, found, or are otherwise not lucky enough to be living with a “forever” family. They sit quietly and patiently in their cold, sterile cages waiting and hoping that the next person who walks in will take them home.

Anyone who has ever spent more than 5 seconds with me knows I am a true animal fanatic. The word “fanatic” does conjure up certain images, some of them quite negative. But when it comes to caring for animals, a real animal lover has little concern about what others may think. His concern is with the animals, their safety and their future.

If you believe that animals deserve a good life and freedom from harm and neglect, please read on. If you just assume someone else will take care of them, go check baseball scores or something.
